"Geothermal" is a word that describes (geo--geologic--earth) and (thermal--heat). Geothermal power is produced by heat from the earth. A hole is drilled deep into a thin portion of the crust of the earth, water is pumped in and superheated and the high pressure water vapor that is produced is piped into a gas turbine electrical generator producing electricity.

The answer is in the question. Geo means Earth and Thermal means Heat. So together it means heat that comes from the earth.

One example is a geyser of hot steamy water that shoots up like Old Faithful.

Other examples are just pools of hot hot water that are heated by volcanic or other hot rocks.

Estimates of the electricity generating potential of geothermal energy vary from 35 to 2000 GW.
