Where should an easel face for best light?

The very best light for drawing or painting is light from a North facing window. If you are lucky enough to have such a window you can work in front of, your easel should sit at a 45 degree angle from the window, in such a manner that your body does not cast a shadow on your work. That means if you are right handed the window is off your left shoulder. If you are left handed then the window is off your right shoulder. If you do not have access to North light, then a very good light, attached over your work with a natural light bulb in it will do almost as well. Make sure it washes down across the work surface in such a manner it does not cause too much glare on the work, cast shadows or shine in your eyes

What happens when light hits a window?

Some of the light will pass through the window. Some of the light will be reflected by the window. A small amount of light will be absorbed by the window. This amount could be increased for certain wavelengths by UV or IR coating. The light that passes through the window will be refracted (or bent) slightly. However, it will not be significant for a thin window pane.

Why do artists require north light?

Direct sunlight is extremely bright and results in washed out colors and stark contrasting shadows. Sometimes this lends to the subject or mood of the art. A sunny beach scene with sun glistening onto the shoreline or a morning figure washed in light through a bedroom window are examples of when direct light is king. In contrast when you use indirect light commonly called north light or reflected light the atmosphere is much more controlled. The value shift is more subtle resulting in far greater control over contrast. Colors can be presented in all their subtleties. Light from a north facing window has helped produce some of the greatest paintings in history. If you look at wonderful still life paintings you will see why north light is preferred many times. Vermeer is best known for his north lit room in which many of his paintings were produced.
