It is a Canadian movie released in 1974, "Shivers" directed by David Cronenberg. Also called "They Came from Within" or "Orgy of the blood parasite". Slither is not really a remake of that movie but it is very influenced.
The movie is set in a fictitious Louisiana town modeled after the town of Natchitoches, which was the setting of the film.
