Enhanced: Nearly all gemstones available today have been enhanced to bring out their best color or to strengthen them. For example, an accepted industry practice in the polishing process for sapphires involves heating the stones to bring out their color. This process simply extends what nature began, since it is heat and pressure that give gemstones their color in the first place.

The word "enhanced" or "treated" are the same in gemology. The difference stays in the trade where traders use word "enhanced" instead of "treated" to make a physiological advantage on buyers. Both the words are accepted, internationally.

Heating causes the colors of a gemstone to lighten, darken or change color completely. It also enhances the brightness and clarity in a gemstone. If a gemstone is heated, it is not visible to the naked eye and can only be detected in a laboratory.
