Anarchy is a society where coercion, violence, force, and authority is absent. If you were to talk to an anarchist, he or she will talk about the factual existence of the state, the applicability of the constitution, and how the state factually has jurisdiction. Anarchist do not believe in a society of chaos, but a society of peace and freewill.

In short, a lack of government or forced laws. You do nothing you do not agree to.

This can go two ways:

- everyone is out for themselves, causing theft, murder, rape and general chaos to take over. This is because there is no law-enforcement to prevent this, and the only person who will defend you is yourself. This is the most common connotation of anarchy.

- it could also lead to communities becoming far more co-operative, where everyone is equal and provides mutual-aid to each other. You look out for your community because if your community fails, you do. This is not communism, where you are forced share anything you earn; instead, you are entitled to anything you have worked for, and nobody can take it away from you. There are rules, however these are rules you have agreed to personally. Nothing is forced upon you, although everyone is free to protect their possessions and lives.

Interestingly, several tribes (which are anarchies by nature) have shown extremely strong communal bonds, and any dispute is usually solved quickly and efficiently - much more so than any western legal system, since family and friends usually encourage the disputers to make a compromise. Harmony is sacred to their way of life, so they protect it well. We, on the other hand, apparently have no qualms about suing a dry cleaner for 67 million dollars for losing a pair of trousers.
