Pot holes
Ice wedging, also called frost wedging or frost shattering is a process where water seeps into cracks in rocks and freezes. Since water expands when it freezes this cpushes the cracks further open, eventually breaking the rock apart.
sidewalks crack in the winter because the frost gets into tiny cracks in the sidewalk and as they expand, they cause the cracks to get bigger.
im NT sure but i think that it was once one big piece of rock then physical and biological weathering caused cracks and it broke into small piece. thank you

The asphalt itself is, but if there are any cracks in as seems common, then water will get under. Cracks in asphalt can be sealed easily now with many good caulk products.
Erosion ... breaking of the rocks.
Cracks are inserted into large plains of concrete or asphalt to provide flexibility. In sidewalks, cracks are used to form a grid and the grid size is based on the surface area of the concrete or asphalt. When tree roots or something like that grow under the pad, they increase the risk of pushing the pad up. if the pad is one solid piece, it will end up breaking. In bridges, cracks are inserted to provide flexibility. When the wind blows, the bridge will slightly move. This is to prevent the major damage of how bldgs and bridges used to get when storms or natural disasters occured.
My driveway has a ton of cracks in it, and I bought some concrete sealer, but my driveway is asphalt! Will the concrete sealer still work with asphalt?

Where cracks form in the asphalt/concrete, repair crews fill the cracks with tar to keep water from seeping in and widening the cracks into pot holes.
It is caused by winter and when water keeps on dripping in the same spot. In colder weather, water causes cracks to expand, while cold causes cement or asphalt to contract, which causes widening of cracks. The sun adds heat which adds to expansion, along with water.
push and a pull
All the moisture has disappeared out of the soil and great cracks are appearing. This is undermining the sidewalk which is breaking up.
