Edmund Halley was a noted scientist and astronomer, whose contributions included cataloging the stars of the southern hemisphere (which hadn't been done before) and persuading Isaac Newton to publish his Principia Mathematica, describing the method of calculus. He invented the world's first diving bell, proved that the "fixed stars" had their own proper motions (by comparing modern observations with Ptolemy's Almagest), and conducted a number of experiments designed to measure the variation of the Earth's magnetic poles.

We remember his name because he realized (probably not the first to do so) that some comets were periodic, and that we could calculate with some precision the time at which the comet would once again come into view. Calculating that the comet of 1531, the comet of 1607 observed by Johannes Kepler, and the comet of 1682 were all following pretty much the same orbital trajectory, Halley suggested that these were three observations of the same comet, which would next come within view in 1758. Halley himself had died in 1742, but when the comet was observed again in 1758, the comet was named "Halley's Comet" in his honor.
