Nile silt is made from extremely small particles of sand that are brought down by the river and deposited along the river banks. The soil is very high in minerals and is used for farming as well as producing bricks along the banks of the river.
When wet the silt (or clay) is extremely sticky very similar to wet bread dough and can hold a large amount of water. When dry the silt bakes hard and cracks as the water evaporates (it can shrink by as much as 40% of its wet volume).
