•In both the groups, the sporophyte is the large, conspicuous, freely existing, independent and dominant phase in the life cycle. The sporophytic plant body is differentiated into true stem, leaves and roots.

•All the vegetative parts of the sporophyte consists of typical xylem and phloem cells. The xylem consists of tracheids and xylem parenchyma, vessels being absent. Phloem consists of sieve-tubes and phloem parenchyma, the companion cells being absent.

They both produce true seeds. Angiosperms ("vessel seed") have their seeds enclosed by ovary tissue (referred to as the fruit) while gymnosperms ("naked seed") are formed without ovary enclosure thus being described as naked, like pine seeds in a cone.
