I can't answer this specifically but I believe it started in America probably in the 1700s or 1800s. Schools had summer break so that the kids and some teachers could help out on the farm at home. Children would tend to the crops and keep the animals fed and clean
Depends on what you mean.In a very real sense The setting of Charlotte's web is E. B. White's barn in Maine (this is where he got inspired to write the book). If based on the book it takes place in Mr. Arable's farm and Mr. Zuckerman's farm and happens during spring, summer, autumn and winter. The majority of the book was the Zukerman's farm where Wilbur lived. But the farm where Fern lived and Wilbur was born was the setting for the first few chapters. Then they went to the fair where Wilbur met Uncle and at last back to Zukermen's farm where he lived the rest of his days without having to worry about being somebody's meal.A farm in the mid 1900s

I have never heard of a farm vacation. If you are in the farming profession you usually never vacation because someone has to take care of the animals 24/7. Some people from cities especially like to go to farms or the country in the summer to get away from the summer heat though. So I guess you could call that a farm vacation.
