It wasn't "Airport," which was a huge 1970 hit based on the novel by Arthur Hailey. The 1980 comedy spoof "Airplane!" was based on the 1957 movie "Zero Hour!" Incidentally, the screenplay for "Zero Hour!" was written by Hailey.
