What is the ABC's TV show LOST about?

After Oceanic Air flight 815 tore apart in mid-air and crashed on a Pacific island, its survivors were forced to find inner strength they never knew they had in order to survive. But they discovered that the island holds many secrets, including a mysterious smoke monster, polar bears, a strange French woman and another group of island residents known as 'The Others'. The survivors have also found signs of those who came to the island before them, including a 19th century sailing ship called The Black Rock, the remains of an ancient statue and bunkers belonging to the Dharma Initiative, a group of scientific researchers.

Desmond always pushes a button to keep the island from doing a certain "something". Juliet and Ben are in a book club meeting. Desmond doesn't push the button one day, the same day Oceanic flight 815 is flying over the island. On board is Jack, a doctor going to his father Christian funeral, Kate, Going to Jail for murdering her father, Sawyer, a conman on the run, Sayid, looking for a girl named Nadia, Locke, a man who lost hope, Sun and Jin, a Japanese couple, Hurley, a lottery winner who believes he's cursed and Claire, a pregnant woman who is going to give up her baby. The plane Crashes and several people die. Juliet and Ben watch the plane split in two. Ben tells Ethan to go to the fuselage and pretend to be a Survivor. Cristian, Jack's dead father, tells a dog to go wake Jack up. The dog belongs to Walt, Micheal's son. Jack wakes up in the woods and goes to the beach where people are panicked. People are rescuing people who landed in the Ocean. One man is sucked into the spinning propeller. Jin is screaming Suns name. At night, Jack gives his speech, "Live together or Die alone." The whole point behind lost is redemption and human completion (if that makes sense) For example, every person who crashes on the island is flawed. Kate and Sawyer have killed people, Jin and Sun are in a terrible state with their marriage with Jin being basically a mobster for Sun's father, Locke is constantly angry either externally or more often, internally and Jack cannot let things go. The characters become who they were meant to be throughout the entire show, some making drastic changes from who they were. Yes, the show gets crazy and crazy things happen, however, the show is still ultimately about redemption and human growth.
