Gandhi fought back without violence and didn't give up.

He was pleaded guilty and was charged money, but refused to pay it, so the British just let him go. He refused to get off the train because he was an Indian, so he was thrown off. He fought against the salt tax by marching through the sea. He tried hard to make it clear to every Indian that it doesn't matter what religion you are, you should still work together and help each other.

i) Our father Mahatma was able to concentrate on our country's freedom related activities with fullest concentration, since his wife allowed him to proceed with his aim and ambition without disturbing or distracting him otherwise.

ii) Not only Kasturba allowed her husband to work for the nation she herself joined her in his activities.

iii) She was a silent partner and worked with involvement but never claimed anything for herself.

Mahatma Gandhi and Indian Freedom MovementMahatma Gandhi was an important part of Indian independence movement even when he was not in the country. He noticed the political condition of the country while he was still in South Africa and urged his countrymen to observe non-violence and remain truthful in order to achieve freedom from the British.

Champaran and Kheda SatyagrahaGandhi's first major achievement was the Champaran agitation and Kheda Satyagraha in 1918. Suppressed by British forces, the farmers were given meager compensation that left them in extreme poverty and sufferings. Along with this, villagers were deprived of civic rights and the villages were dirty while alcoholism and other vises were rampant. As if it was not enough, the British landlords levied oppressive tax on poor farmers leading to desperate situation. Seeing this, Gandhi established an ashram organizing his supporters and volunteers to study and survey the villages and look for incidents of sufferings and degenerate living.

He gained the confidence of villagers and began the clean up of villages, building of schools and hospitals and encouraged the village leaderships to condemn the social evils in their areas. In the meantime, he was arrested on the charge of creating unrest and antagonizing public against the government. However, he was supported by hundreds and thousands of people who protested against his arrest and the court had to grant his release. This forced the British government to sign an agreement cancelling the tax, granting compensation and control over the land to the poor. It was during this time that people began calling Gandhi Mahatma or Bapu. This incident made Gandhi famous all over India.

Non-Cooperation MovementThis was a movement intended to show British that they were no longer accepted in the country and the Indian people wanted freedom from their rule. Non-cooperation and peaceful resistant were Gandhi's weapons in fight against injustice against the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre of civilians by British troops in Punjab. Gandhi not only criticized the brutal act of British forced but also the Indian act of retaliation. The focal point of this movement was obtaining complete self-government and control of Indian institutions and political, individual and spiritual independence. In this regard, Gandhi advocate the boycott of all British products from clothes, educational institutes, law courts to resignation from the government posts and forsaking British titles and honors.

In 1920, under Gandhi's leadership, the Congress was reorganized and given a new constitution, whose goal was swaraj. Under his guidance, the party transformed to mass national appeal. Non-cooperation Movement was a great success and received participation from all over India. However, it came to an abrupt end due to a violent clash in Chauri Chaura town of Uttar Pradesh, in February 1922. Fearing bloodshed and violent outcome, Gandhi called a stop to this movement after which he was arrested on March 10, 1922.

The Salt Satyagraha (Salt March)Salt Satyaghara was a result of British government's refusal to grant India dominion status and to free thousands of innocent people imprisoned in jails all over the country. As an act of peaceful refusal, Gandhi resorted to a new campaign of non-violence that had independence for country its main goal.

Gandhi planned and launched a satyagraha against the salt tax in March 1930. The main highlighted of this protest is the famous Salt March to Dandi from March 12 to April 6, when he marched 400 kilometers (248 miles) from Ahmedabad to Dandi, Gujarat to make salt himself. Thousands of people accompanied him in his march to the sea. This campaign was very successful at disrupting the British rule. As a result, the government imprisoned over 60,000 people.

However, the government later tried to negotiate with Gandhi and decided to free all the prisoners if Congress ended the Civil Disobedience Movement. Also, Gandhi was the only Indian invited in the Round Table Conference in London. This was a marked victory of Gandhi and Congress as representatives of Indians.

Quit India MovementWorld War II broke out in 1939, although initially Gandhi favored a "non-violent moral support" to British but later he withdrew this offer of participation in war for "freedom of democracy" when India was being denied the same freedom. As the war progressed, Gandhi's demand for independence also increased leading to Quit India Movement. This was Gandhi' as well as Congress party's most vehement and definite revolt against the British.

The Quit India Movement was successful enough to make British government agree to independence and it became clear by 1943 that power would be transferred to Indian hands. At this point, the Quit India Movement was called off and more than 100,000 people were released from prisons that included Congress leaders as well as common men. This lead to extensive dialogue between Hindus and Muslims regarding the division of power for freedom in which too Gandhi played a major role.

The Khadi movement aimed at boycotting foreign goods and promoting Indian goods, thereby improving India's economy. Mahatma Gandhi began promoting the spinning of khādī for rural self-employment and self-reliance (instead of using cloth manufactured industrially in Britain) in 1920s India thus making khadi an integral part and icon of the Swadeshi movement. The freedom struggle revolved around the use of khādī fabrics and the dumping of foreign-made clothes. When some people complained about the costliness of khadi to Mahatma Gandhi, he started wearing only dhoti. Thus it symbolized the political ideas and independence itself, and to this day most politicians in India are seen only in khādī clothing. The flag of India is only allowed to be made from this material, although in practice many flag manufacturers, especially those outside of India, ignore this rule.
