What is the Titanic conspiracy theory?

The bizarre idea that the White Star Line remodeled Titanic's older sister (but significantly smaller and different) ship Olympic, to pass for Titanic. Then they remodeled Titanic to look like Olympic. This allowed them to sink the slightly older Olympic, calling it Titanic. Then they could keep running the Titanic, as "Olympic".

Brighter people have noticed that it would be tremendously difficult and expensive to remodel Olympic into a Titanic-fake. Everything would have to be rebuilt, repainted, remodeled to perfectly match a new ship, well enough to fool the many people who had travelled on Olympic.

Then they would have to mess up the brand-new Titanic to perfectly resemble Olympic.

And it would all have to be done without any of the hundreds of workers spilling to the insurance agents, although the reward would be substantial. Murdering 1500 innocent people is not something the courts would whittle their finger at, either.

And in exchange for all this, they would wind up with one ship, not two, and it would, as "Olympic", be the far less valuable of the two. People knew Olympic wasn't new, and couldn't be charged as much to ride in her.

In short, you would have to be rock-stupid to trade out Olympic for Titanic, and this fact is very obvious.

The problem is that conspiracy buffs start out knowing nothing about the subject in question, then get worse, trading made-up stuff only with each other, avoiding common sense and dodging information sources that would help them understand what really happened. Any site that reveals info that disproves the theory, is considered "disinformation". Any person who disproves something they pretend is right, is a "paid shill" of whoever they want to blame stuff on. Please note that in all conspiracy theory history, I doubt even *one* canceled paycheck for shilling, has ever turned up. Who would spend a dime to manipulate the opinions of this sort of person?

Try, for example, telling a 9/11 "Truth"er that three planes hit three buildings, and the impact and fire caused the two Towers to fall. In no uncertain terms you will be told that there were no planes, and that the Towers were destroyed by silent A-bombs, gravity-defying thermite, and Death Rays from Space.
