The whole whale had some economical value. The meat was considered low value and went for dog food and such. The hide was water proof material. Whale bone was decorative and constructive material. Whale oil was used for street lights and lamps in general. The single most valuable part however was whale vomit which had applications as a perfume.
No they did not. They held it over a fire and used the oil that came off it to make candles and other resources

It is the Humpback whale
The global whale population decreased from the heydays of Whaling, conducted by Britain, United States, Norway, even Australia in the late 1800s to the early 1900s by 70-80%. The IWC, International Whaling Commission put in place a gobal moratorium on comercial whaling in 1982. Since then certain species are believed to have recovered in great numbers, such as Minke Whales, while other species, such as Blue Whales remain on the endangered list.
The whale population has decreased dramatically from the time in which whaling was a popular industry to the present. Whale oil is not used often today because whales are being protected.
