Death Note is a anime/manga about how a Shinigami (god of death) gave a seemingly random human the power to hand out capital punishment to any other human whose name and face is known to them. Supposedly, the Shinigami did this out of boredom and to toy with the humans.

Ryuk, a Shinigami, got his hands on two Death Notes and randomly placed one on Earth in hopes that a human would find it. Death Notes are notebooks that allow the owner of the Note to kill a human whose name and face is known to the owner in two ways: specifically (which leads to experimentation) and generally with a heart attack. Shinigami use them in their routine killing of humans.

Light Yagami, the human who found Ryuk's notebook, is an unusually smart high school senior living in the Kanto region of Japan. Almost immediately after finding the Note, he began to consider himself superior to other humans and often referred to himself as a god. He goes about dealing "justice" by killing hundreds of convicted criminals with the Death Note.

The police catch on that there must be someone manning the killings, calling this murderer "Kira", which is derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the English word "killer". In addition, the cops have the enigmatic detective "L" to help them and through his brilliance, they are able to trick Light into revealing that he is int he Kanto region of Japan.

Thenceforth, the battle between Kira and L commences. L must find Kira and bring him to justice and Kira must find L and kill him.

Death Note is a Japanese manga ("cartoon") that is About a Boy named Light Yagami. He discovers a notebook called the death note, and whenever you write someone's name in it, they die. He uses it to kill criminals, and is eventually called KIRA, because he kills hundreds of people. With the death note, there comes a Shinigami, or "Death God", this one named Ryuk. The series is about how Light conceals his identity from American and Japanese officials while making the world a better place.

Then his Shinigami's friend, sends down another Notebook and it is picked up by someone called Misa amane. She eventually meets Light and by the end of the series, they have met L, the worlds leading detective, who is killed by someone with Lights Deathnote of which he gives up, Near, Mello and Matt. Light dies about 3 years later, after suffereing in an abandoned building for 3 years, by that time, Misa who was then his girlfriend commits suicide and Near, says one thing. "Light, you lost THE GAME" which annoys a lot of anime and Manga addicts, check it out.

Below are the primary rules of the Death Note as written by Ryuk before he dropped his Death Note in the human world:

- The human whose name is written in this note shall die.

- This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.

- If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the person's name, it will happen.

- If the cause of death is not specified, the person will simply die of a heart attack.

- After writing the cause of death, details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

There are many other rules for using the Death Note and even the Shinigami are not generally aware of all of them. Some of them can be found in between chapters in published volumes of the Death Note manga or before and after commercial breaks in the episodes of the anime. It has a lot of people who have 'God complexes' and they try to make the world a 'better place' by killing all the people who have broken the law majorly. As it turns out, Kira, or Light Yagami who is the main character, makes the world worse, having people fear for their lives and starting major Kira cults that end up beating a character to death in the anime.
