Personally, I like Gardevoir because of its high special attack and special defense, something that I feel defines a psychic type. I think Gardevoir is better than Gallade because Gallade's Fighting Type gives it a weakness to Flying types and decreases its defense against other psychic moves.
Alakazam is okay, but its low defense often lets it die too quickly for me.
If you're looking for something with high defense, then try Bronzong. Bronzong is only weak against Fire-typed moves.
