Mobile services Switching Center (MSC). It acts like a normal switching node of the PSTN or ISDN, and in addition provides all the functionality needed to handle a mobile subscriber, such as registration, authentication, location updating, handovers, and call routing to a roaming subscriber. These services are provided in conjuction with several functional entities, which together form the Network Subsystem.

BSCs connect to a single MSC and each BSC typically controls several Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs).Some of the BTSs may be co-located at the BSC and the other may be remotely located and connected to the BSC by

· microwave link or

· leased line.

How does the Base Transceiver station works?

BTS works by regularly sending beacon signal in its coverage range, registration the mobile station in its coverage and as soon as the mobile station invokes service a free channel is assigned to it. MS sends its voice or data signal to BTS and BTS sends it to BSC and BSC sends it to MSC and MSC connects to the other side Mobile Station/PSTN phone/ or connects to SMSC if the service is for SMS or SGSN for internet service. Thus BTS is the first contact for connection or release of a mobile service.

What is the need of having a GMSC in GSM network when there is an MSC?

A normal MSC will connect BSC to the PLMN/PSTN Network directly. Meaning to say it will need to do the call connections and management from BSC all the way to PLMN/PSTN network. Once the network expands, the MSC will face congestion and therefore a solution needed. GMSC - Gateway MSC, as the name implies, will in this case serve as an interconnection between MSC and PLMN/PSTN Network. Thus this free up the resources of the MSC itself need to perform all the originally tasks.
