Bowens' Reaction Series measures the melting points of various silicate minerals, with the ones with highest melting points at the top. So as a completely molten

magma containing all these minerals cools down, the first to crystallise are:

ABOUT 1400 CELSIUS

  1. Olivine
  2. Pyroxene (e.g. augite)
  3. Amphibole (e.g. hornblende)
  4. Biotite mica
  5. Orthoclase feldspar
  6. Muscovite mica
  7. Silica (e.g. quartz).

ABOUT 800 CELSIUS

Notice I've deliberately left out plagioclase feldspar because plagioclases of different composition crystallise out at different temperatures. Calcium-rich plagioclase crystallises out at about the same temperature as olivine (mineral 1), but sodium-rich plagioclase crystallises out about the same temperature as biotite mica (mineral 4). All plagioclase crystallises out at a higher temperature than orthoclase (mineral 5).

So in answer to your question the first minerals to form as a magma cools are olivine and calcium-rich plagioclase feldspar, at around 1400 Celsius.

Does the series 1 divided by x diverge?

No. If x tends to infinite, 1/x tends to zero.

What is the most populare Lemony Snicket book?

I think that is A Series of Unfortunate Events, which book in that series is hard to say, most likely the first one because that tends to be the one people read first and decide if they wish to read on.

What mineral tends to form last in Bowen's series?

Quartz.

Is the formation of fossils a common event?

No. For fossil formation to take place a series of fortunate events must occur. If any part of the series is missing we will never see the fossil! In fact, fossilization is a fairly rare occurrence. Nature tends toward recycling. That includes just about everything from plants and animals to rocks and minerals.

How does oxygen in the atmosphere differ from oxygen in rock and minerals?

Atmospheric oxygen tends to be elemental oxygen (O2). Oxygen in rocks and minerals is chemically combined with other elements to form compounds called oxides.

Why is the soil of plains so fertile?

Plains receive eroded minerals from higher elevations, and erosion does not remove as much dead plant material as it does from hills and mountains. Precipitation tends to percolate minerals down into the soil.

What is the difference between an arithmetic series and a geometric series?

An arithmetic series is the sequence of partial sums of an arithmetic sequence. That is, if A = {a, a+d, a+2d, ..., a+(n-1)d, ... } then the terms of the arithmetic series, S(n), are the sums of the first n terms and S(n) = n/2*[2a + (n-1)d]. Arithmetic series can never converge.A geometric series is the sequence of partial sums of a geometric sequence. That is, if G = {a, ar, ar^2, ..., ar^(n-1), ... } then the terms of the geometric series, T(n), are the sums of the first n terms and T(n) = a*(1 - r^n)/(1 - r). If |r| < 1 then T(n) tends to 1/(1 - r) as n tends to infinity.
