Hi,
a relay is a switch that takes a small amperage signal to operate a small electromagnet which in turn connects a higher amperage feed. IE when you pull the switch to flash you headlights the voltage from a small gauge wire goes through the switch on the steering column to a relay that in turn allows a much heavier gauge wire to operate the headlights. Once the switch is released the electromagnet will not have the voltage needed to keep the circuit connected and the lights will go out. Relays are really useful and are used to protect the wiring loom from damage.
