Private morality consists of choices that one makes that affect one's personal wellbeing. It differs from public morality in that society as a whole is not harmed directly by its absence. For instance, murder is a violation of public virtue. When one murders another he unjustly violates their right to life and harms another member of society. Religion, on the other hand, is a personal choice that society has no reason to condemn, so long as it doesn't infringe upon the rights of others. Some things, such as gay marriage, may at first seem like an act of private morality, but the fact that they forcibly impose their definition of marriage upon the religious beliefs of others makes them a violation of public morality.
