In 1885 and maybe even before that, shepards pie was made a proper meal, back then any dish with potato topping was referd as cottage pie. But nowadays here in the uk, we obviously know the difference, a shepherd pie is usually made with lamb or mutton and with the cottage pie, it is usually made out of beef (minced and such) xx
