Giraffes are able to breed at any time. In some places, however, conception appears to take place during the rainy season so that the birth occurs in the dry months. In the Serengeti, most births take place from May to August. Cows reach sexual maturity about 3 and a half yrs old-- bulls a year later--but giraffes generally do not breed until they are 4 and a half-cows and 7 or 8- bulls. Females can go on producing young until they are at least 20 yrs old.
