In a rather stupid plot device, all of the characters except possibly Mr. Claus are nameless. There is one called Bill, but he is not the lead character. The Conductor, and other RR men functional anonymously. This does add a touch of mystery but If I was a passenger on a long train trip and met a girl, we would strike up conversation and I would ask her name? Somehow this does not transpire. It is not like a crowd scene witnessing an accident on say, Emergency or a crime drama. this sort of all things to all men anonymity device- used oddly enough in The Time Machine- it turns be off.l in RR parlance it drops the Johnson Bar into center position, Neutral, no forward motion is possible!
