In the original Anderson tale- not Gerry Anderson but Hans Christian, it was a sermonizing thing against Race Mixing- The Mermaid- no name in the original ( Hah , here"s an expendable character) makes love to the Viking Prince- and woosh- first she loses her voice- then her life- dissolves into the ocean well ahead of schedule- it was explained that Mermaids live for 300 years in normal circumstances and at the end of this time become foam on the water- for that reason no Mermaid bodies are ever found or fossils recovered- a neat science-fiction touch to explain lack of evidence. It was against Race- or more accurately species-mixing.
Answer 2: I think the moral is more about not trying to be something you are not, or it will end badly. eg, Sirenetta (the little mermaid does, in fact, have a name) dies and has to do 300 years of service with the daughters of the air to earn an immortal soul.
I think The Little Mermaid has many themes/morals. The most important one would probably have to do with selfless love. Ariel gives up everything for Prince Eric because she loves him and is willing to do anything to be with him. She goes against her father and goes up to the surface when its forbidden to mer-people. What makes Ariel more vulnerable is when she alters her body when Ursula gives her legs. Also, she gives up her voice. Agaist all odds, Ariel loves Eric even though they are too totally different people. It could relate to Romeo and Juliet and the theme of "star-crossed" lovers.
Its all about laaahv.
The original Anderson tale ended tragically- she dissolved into the water prematurely ( a neat device- no Mermaid fossils)- and it was aimed, between the lines as are many fantasy tales- against the errors of Miscegeneation. ( Race Mixing) this does nto come to pass in the Movie version- Ariel and Daddy are not exactly a ( happy family) there is oppositional defiance all through the fiolm between King Neptune or Triton- and his errant offspring. not a good idea for kids, if you ask me.
The moral of the story the Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Anderson is that women should not change themselves for a man. This is apparent because after changing herself, the prince cheats on the mermaid. Instead of killing the woman and giving in to what would ultimately make her evil, the mermaid returns to the sea where she dies and turns into sea-foam.
