One of the best known landmarks is actually a group of islands off the coast of Cannes. Les Isles de Lerins comprised of St. Marguerite, St Honore (now under the control of Cistercian monks). There are 7 chapels on the island, the oldest being in the shape of a trefoil in plan. It is possible that when it was built in the 11th century that it was in tribute to St. Patricks alleged use of the Trefle (the Shamrock) to explain the concept of the Trinity. The chapel is actually called 'la Trinidade'. Their other main claim to fame is that they were the location of the imprisonment of the Man in the Iron Mask. St. Honore also lays claim to the legend that St. Patrick on his way back from his meeting with Pope Celestine I, spent time on retreat there before heading on his mission to convert the "Pagan" Irish. It is possible that the name Lerins is a combination of the old Gaelic name of Ireland, Erin and the French 'le'.

Corsica is usually considered one of the 26 régions of France, although strictly speaking Corsica is a "territorial collectivity" (collectivité territoriale) by law. As a territorial collectivity, it enjoys powers slightly more important than other French régions, but for the most part its status is quite similar to the status of the other régions. Corsica is referred to as a "région" in common speech, and is almost always listed among the other régions of France. Although the island is separated from the continental mainland by the Ligurian Sea, politically Corsica is considered part of Metropolitan France. Corsica is famed as the birthplace of Napoléon Bonaparte
