The conflicts of E.T. can be interpreted in a couple ways. The first and most obvious is that E.T. is stuck on earth, far away from his home and family. Thus it is E.T.'s objective to get home, safely. For Elliot, who is dealing with the divorce of his parents, the conflict is more internal. He needs to go against the convention that he has always lived by - his parents are always right. Specifically that adults are NOT always right and that E.T. is a real thing. He also needs to help E.T. get home.
