In the original, 1973 version of The Wicker Man starring Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee, a Scottish policeman is assigned to a case on a remote Scottish island concerning a missing schoolgirl. Despite his investigations, he is unable to find her but seems to be promised help from the Lord Summerisle, the laird of the island. It transpires that the policeman, who is pure and a virgin, was in fact lured there by the pagan cult to which the whole island subscribes, in order to use him as a human sacrifice in their midsummer ritual. This ritual involves a huge wicker figure of a man into which animals and the human sacrifice are placed and the wicker man set on fire. This ritual is the last chilling part of the film.
