The Baccalauréat, universally known as LE BAC and much dreaded. This is essentially a competitive examination, and those successful are awarded a University place. There are practically no tuition fees, though students of course must pay for their keep and Social Security payments are compulsory. There is a small isnscription fee, but scholarships (Bourses) are available to cover this. However, entry to a University is by no means a guarantee of a degree, as a number of students are weeded out each year.
