The tern 'glee' originated in England in the late 1700's when a group of men would come to a club to sing a short, 3 minute song, called a 'glee'.

The glee club was born and the craze moved to America in the early to mid 1800's with the first glee club in Harvard University, which still exists today.

the funny thing is the term originated in England when most British people (including myself) had no idea what a glee club was until the show was released over here in the UK.
