This sort of sounds like The Princess Bride (1987), only he doesn't exactly go to a city, though it never really tells you where he is meant to be going, just that he has to leave so he can make a life for him and the woman he loves. in the book you find out he is supposed to take a ship to America, but it ends up getting captured by the notorious pirate 'The Dread Pirate Roberts'.
