The only one that comes to mind is "Behind Prison Gates" (1939), but the guy is a detective, not a reporter.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0031260/ I've been looking for info on this movie for years. I thought the title was "Iron Mask" but cannot find anything other than "The Iron Mask" swashbuckling movies. As I recall, in the movie in question, the warden decided that in order for the reporter to really know what it was like to be on death row he would have to believe he was actually going to die. Just before the point where they were to flip the switch, they took off the "iron mask"and... you'll have to watch the movie to find out!
