John Wilkes Booth was among the finest actors of his day. He was a vain, self-assured person. He had a magnetic personality and a gift for words. He performed his plays in front of Union solders and Southern solders. He was well connected and was even a guest at Lincoln's second inauguration. Unknown to most Americans, he was a secret agent for the Confederacy. He was the original 007. General Stonewall Jackson said Booth was a weapon deadly as cannon fire. His last act as a secret agent was the killing of Abraham Lincoln. Booth then escaped to Mexico and at a later date move back into the US.

I have been asked to make changes to this answer because it is not accepted history. I have checked each line and there are no corrections needed. It is factual as I know it. The history books are wrong and full of misinformation. You will not find truth in accepted history.
