john is on a two week leave from the army, he meets Savannah and falls for her, he leaves and she goes back to school, they write letters to each other, but then he sees about 9/11. he reensigns and they don't write for a while. later, Savannah writes him a letter starting with dear john, and ending in good-bye, she has been engaged. Johns army time ends, his father is ill in hospital, he has a melonola. john goes home, into his fathers office room, and takes out his fathers favourite coin (which he found when he was younger). he writes a letter; next day, he goes into the hospital, his fathers bed is empty. he has been moved out, not responsive. john gives him his coin and the letter, he reads it to his father. when he got shot, he thought about when he was , learning about coins, and how he got into liking coins. he says hes a coin, in the army, punched from metal,stamped and cleaned, edges sorted, two small holes in him, no longer perfect. tells him after he got shot, before blackout, last thing he thought of, and then he doesnt say. memories come to him while he is in the sea, he lets his board go and goes under. at funeral, for his father. drives to savannahs house (farm), he tells her about his dad. he finds out who she is married too, and is shocked. her husband has cancer, and is in hospital. john talks to him, he is told she still loves him. while her husband is dying, he asks john to look after her; john sells his fathers coin collection to pay for his treatment, he feels his life is worth saving. the treatment works and her husband is released. John never regretted loving her, and it ends with john watching Savannah looking at the moon. this makes him think, and remember the past, and makes him realise savannahs undying love for him.
