In the book The Egypt Game by Zilpha Keatley Snyder, the main problem is that there was a murderer living in the town the story is set in. When April (the main character) forgets her textbook while babysitting, she goes outside at night, and looks for where she might have dropped her textbook. While searching, she is suddenly attacked by the murderer. Luckily, the creepy-looking and greatly avoided Professor, the prime suspect, cries for help, and the murderer is found and put into a hospital for the mentally insane.

*** You should really read this book. It is very good. ***
