A good rule of thumb is one hour for each 10 degrees water temp. IE: 60* six hrs. You can cut back in cold temps and when pool is not in use.

Answ:: Another rule of thumb, practiced by me, is that you run the pump for as long as it takes to maintain water clarity - meaning that you can see and just about read what is on a quarter at the bottom of the pool at the main drain. Every pool will have slightly different requirements. You have to turn the body of water over - meaning filtering the water - at least one to 1.5 times per day or filter cycle. So, if it takes 8 hrs to turn the water over and to maintain water clarity then that is what it takes for your pool - not necessarily your neighbor's pool. At a pool temp of 60 degrees there should be a lesser demand for filtration than that of a pool with a temp of 75 or 80 degrees. As a minimum, possibly with a temp of 60, your water turn over should be about 4 to 6 hrs. If, say at 80 degrees, your pump is running 8 to 10 hrs. and your water is not so clear then boost the run time on the pump in one hour increments until you achieve clarity. You may, in fact, have to boost the run time to 18 hrs in order to achieve your goal. Again, every pool will have slightly different parameters as to total run time in the pump and filter. k

How much time should the filter be running after a new pool is plastered?

The filter doesn't run, the pump does. A good rule of thumb is that the pump be sized so as to turn the entire amount of water in the pool over in 8 hours.

John is trying to drain a swimming pool. He has two pumps but he can only use one at a time. He knows that the time a pump takes to drain the pool varies inversely with the power in watts of the pump.?

If the time it takes to drain the pool varies inversely with the power of the pump, it means that as the power of the pump increases, the time it takes to drain the pool decreases. Therefore, John should use the pump with the higher power to drain the pool in the shortest amount of time.
