Its a folktale about a young girl, wondering about the world. That is why Raoul calls her Little Lotte. However Lotte is also short for Charlotte, so if Christine's mother's name was Charlotte it would make sense, if Christine reminded people of her mother, for her to be called Little Lotte. But also in the book it describes Lotte (from the folk tale) as blonde haired, blue eyed, the whole nine yards, and in the book Christine fit that description.
