There are a couple of synonyms for the phrase "by doing so." One is "therefore," and another phrase is "as a result." For example, if your sentence read "He decided to take the bus to work, and by doing so saved gas money," it would also make sense to say "He decided to take the bus to work, therefore saving gas money" or "He decided to take the bus to work, and as a result saving money."
