As a short answer, I would say that the theme is that of good triumphing over evil; however there is a variety of "sub-themes," such as: all suffering will eventually come to an end, and that unjust oppressors will pay for their actions. One could almost say that there is also an element of "karma" to this story. What goes around comes around.
