He points out to them that they were already capable of solving their own problems, which is the case. I think there is some interesting thematic tension in the story. On the one hand, Dorothy gains the insight at the very end that 'there's no place like home', implying stability, constancy, loyalty, familial love and contentment. On the other, the story is about growing up, facing fears, using good thinking and jumping into the unknown. It might even be seen as a coming of age story. I'd sum it up differently from Dorothy. I'd say 'You can't leave home until you know there's no place like it. Then you must.'
