It's some kind of alien creature from outer space. Beyond that, we don't learn much about what it is or where it comes from, besides the fact that it's a shape shifter that can perfectly imitate other living creatures, and that it can survive subzero temperatures.

At least, the 1982 John Carpenter version doesn't explain much about it. I haven't seen the new remake, or the original 1951 Howard Hawks version.

An alien life form with the capabilities of replicating any host that it takes a liking to. Specifically humans, as the whole motivation of The Thing is to spread it's germ across the globe, making all humans Things.
