It was from 1309 to 1377 the home of the Popes, and from 1377 to 1403 of the anti-popes. The Palais des Papes is still the main tourist attraction. The second is the remains of the old bridge, which is featrured in a French children's song 'Sur le pont d'Avignon'.

Avignon is an historical town which was home to the Papacy for a century. It still has a large castle built to serve as the Pope's residency, the "chateau des Papes". It also famous for 'le Pont d'Avignon', a bridge which spans only half of the river (the other half was destroyed) which is the theme of a very popular folk song.
