Old Yeller was a faithful dog and good friend of the main character. The boy was attacked in the movie by a rabid dog and Old Yeller defended the boy, saving him from an uncertain future, and quite possibly death. They prayed that Old Yeller had not been bitten by the other, diseased, dog. and waited. They put him in a kennel to keep him and others safe, should he show any signs , and at first it seemed the miracle had occurred, that Old Yeller had indeed escaped the rabid dog's poisonous bite. But it was a case of too much hope too soon and Old Yeller started showing the sad and classic progression of rabies. Unfortunately in the era when the book was written, and earnestly, even now once an animal is to the point of showing symptoms of the disease, it is almost invariably fatal.

The disease progression in an unvacceinated dog is as follows: unquenchable thirst, confusion, photophobia, panic, complete aversion to water, muscular spasms, uncontrollable rage, severe distonia, muscle spasm, paralysis and death.

When it became obvious to the boy that his 'old friend' didn't recognize him anymore, and was suffering a great deal, he felt it was his responsibility to help his old friend regain the dignity he had show during life by helping him die before the rabies got so bad its attacks were excruciating. So the boy mustered up his courage and shot his friend before Old Yeller fell further into the agonies of the disease.
