Best Answer

V'Ger is the gigantic alien object that threatens Earth in the film Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979). At the end of the film, it is revealed that V'Ger is actually the 20th century space probe Voyager 6 with a few "improvements", via a detour to a planet ruled by advanced machines. Note that there was no Voyager 6 in real life. The program actually ended with Voyager 2. However, the first two in the series were launched only two years prior to the film's release, so more were expected at the time.

Was therea ever a space mission where they sent a record player to space to see if any lifeforms found it?

Not a player. However, the Yoyager probes (Vger from the first Star Trek movie) contain records. The aliens will have to supply their own player. "The Voyager Golden Record is a phonograph record included in the two Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977. It contains sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth. It is intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form, or far future humans, that may find it. The Voyager spacecrafts are not heading towards any particular star, but in about 40,000 years Voyager 1 will be within 1.6 light years of the star AC+79 3888 in the Ophiuchus constellation.[1]" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyager_Golden_Record
