The boat used in the movie "On Golden Pond" was a Chris-Craft 22 ft Sportsman. Actually, 2 identical boats were used for filming. The Sportsman is a classic wooden boat model referred to as a "utility." A utility is an open boat without cockpits, which has the engine under a box, and you can walk around the engine, or sit on the box. Although modern boats are often referred to as "runabouts" under a certain length, classic boats are not referred to as runabouts unless they have individual cockpits with the engine concealed under the deck. The Sportsman was also built in 17 ft, 18 ft, 19 ft, 20 ft, 24 ft, 25 ft, 26 ft and 29 ft.

Actually three boats were used... Two good boats and the crash boat... One good boat was used for primary shooting which was 95% of the scenes. One boat was only used for one brief scene, (full throttle scene). And the Crash boat which was only used in the final crash segment...
