I think a large bit of it depended on which part of the country you were from. Since you didn't ask which country I will assume you were referring to the US.

Getting hold of a store bought candy back then was very rare. Mostly one time of the year at best and that would be around Christmas. All other times, chances are you were going to get homemade candies. The rare times that you did get store bought candies it was from the local mercantile or one closest to where you lived. You could buy hard candy, gum drops, peppermint, and horehound candies. Some kids that were lucky enough to find a sassafras tree root used that as a sort of candy. Normal people only was able to buy only so much sugar and it has to be used very sparingly and only got like a half a pound to last all month to several months. So in saying this in place of candies, pies, cookies, cakes were made and getting close to holidays in some parts of the country a thing called Potato candy was made. However in my younger years I tried some potato candy and in my humble opinion, I'd rather lick the salt off a rats tail. But I guess back then if that was all you could get it tasted pretty darn good. My great great Grandmother talked about her mother used to make them something called potato fudge too. Oh, almost forgot, Licorice candy was the going thing back then too. Hpoe this helps. Now all this info come from first hand because I am old now and this come from my Grandmothers mother stories she used to tell us about her growing up in the Laura Ingless days..
