The Guns of Navarone, both the novel by Alastair MacLean and the movie based upon it, were works of fiction. There are a number of inaccuracies in the movie, including many of the weapons used; some were intentional.

The cliff guns in the movie were overly large, mocked up props. They were non-operational, built in a sound stage, and were designed to appear huge and menacing to push the plot of the movie, and further vilify the German troops who operated them.

MacLean likely, although not confirmed, based his story on the Greek island of Leros, the sight of intense fighting between Allied and Axis forces during WW2. While there were costal guns installed on Leros, none were remotely close to the size of the props used in the movie.
