Microwave safe simply means that the material that the "utensil" or cookware is made of does not readily react to the bombardment of microwaves and many microwaves can pass through them more unobscured than with other materials. Their structures may get warm as they are excited but do not melt, spark or release their composits into food/air etc... For example metals will spark as the microwaves hit their surface, certain glasses and ceramics will get hot as their molecules build up energy from the microwaves radiating through them until they let loose and crack or explode.

Stainless steel utensils can easily scratch nonstick coatings. To be safe, use only plastic or wood utensils with nonstick cookware.
Nylon cooking utensils are safe as long as they are not heated about 600 degrees Fahrenheit. Cooking foods do not get that hot, and most of the time pans do not get that hot so they should be fine to use.

Utensils is a noun.
With non-stick cookware you really need to use plastic utensils that will not scratch the surface. Stainless steel however, is not as easily scratchable as it does not have the non-stick coating. That said, whatever utensils you do use, do not dig too hard into the pan as you may scrape into the surface and end up with metals in your food.
The important thing is that you give them utensils which are safe and won't damage your cookware if it's teflon coated. They would need a whisk,a ladle or two, and a spatula. Silicon spatulas are often good in place of whisks and less likely to damager your cookware.
