Albus Dumbledore had told Severus to kill him so that the Elder Wand (which Dumbledore was the current master of) wouldn't belong to anybody, or so Voldemort would think when he stole it, however Draco was the true master of the wand When Voldemort discovered that the wand wasn't working properly he killed Snape. Dumbledore asked Snape to kill him knowing he was going to die anyway because he put the Horcrux ring on his finger and sent a curse thoughout his hand - had it spread he would have died anyway thankfully Snape managed to freeze it.
