Apparently, the critics did not consider Dey as being particularly adept at comedy. They also stated that the "chemistry" with Jay Thomas was virtually non-existent. The CBS network apparently commissioned audience research which confirmed these observations. The network then instructed the creator, Diane English, to attempt to resolve the situation. Diane English had written the character of Wallis Porter to react in a specific way during the series and Susan Dey wanted the character to be more involved in the comedic situations. These "creative" differences could not be reconciled and presumably Dey decided to quit the show. I get the impression that the network policy was to maneuver Dey into quitting the show. Although, publically the departure was stated to be "amicable", there was a certain amount of hostility.
The Partridge Family. She played Laurie Partridge, who was the Skip Organist. Not to many rock groups used Skip Organs but some did, like the Doors and the Animals so it was not unrealistic.
